Installing Microsoft Lync

This tutorial applies to the following operating system(s):

Windows        Macintosh

Learn how to install the desktop version of the 2013 Lync Client. The Lync client is a feature-rich instant messaging, VOIP and collaboration tool available to faculty/staff, students and alumni/retiree users at no extra cost. Please note that in order to install the Lync desktop client, you will need to have local administrator rights on the machine.

Step 1

Log in to your Office 365 email account, at if you are a faculty or staff member or if you are a student, using you full email address and password.

Step 2

Once logged in to OWA, look at the top of the screen and click the gear icon at the top-right corner of the page, located next to your account name.

This will open up a menu - in this menu, click the office 365 settings. This will take you to a page with a large menu. From here, select software and then find the Lync client app download.

Depending on whether you are a student, faculty/staff or alumni/retiree, you may have additional software you can download, including programs such as Microsoft OneNote, Microsoft Web Apps, and other software.

Step 3

Click the install button to begin installation. Your browser will begin downloading a small installation file. Once the download finishes, run the file either directly from your browser, or by navigating to your downloads folder.

On a Mac, you will need to run the .dmg file to start the install, but downloading the file is the same as on a Windows machine.

Step 4

Run the file to begin installation. You will see several screens pop up during installation and then the Lync client will come up.

Step 5

Once the Lync client launches, you will be prompted with an "Activate Office" screen. Simply enter your full email address and hit next button. Because of the licensing between Microsoft and the U of I, your email will be detected and used to properly authenticate the Lync client.

Finally, you will be asked to accept the Microsoft Terms and Services for Lync. Click the accept button when it comes up and Lync will become fully activated.

Step 6

Lync is now installed and ready to be used for your collaboration needs as an instant messaging or VOIP client, as well as offering the ability to share documents and work collaboratively on presentations with ease.

You can learn more about the basic communication features of Lync in our Lync Basics tutorial, or dive into the advanced features with our Advanced Lync Features tutorial.

Step 7

On a Mac, Lync has several additional caveats before it can be used. Firstly, your password must not be longer than 15 characters. Also, the server settings must be entered manually.

To do this, open the Lync client and click the advanced option at the bottom of the program and set both internal and external servers to point to
