This tutorial applies to the following operating system(s):

Windows        Macintosh

Overview:

  • After completion, you will have your Office 365 staff/student email configured on your desktop Outlook program.

The University of Idaho runs on the Office 365 Exchange platform and as such, ITS recommends using Microsoft Outlook for your desktop email client. This tutorial will assist you in setting up your account in Office 2013 for PC and Office 2011 for Mac.

Windows - Step 1

If you are launching Outlook for the first time, you will be automatically taken to the add account screen. If you already have an account in Outlook but want to add another, you can get to the add account screen by going to the file tab, clicking the Account Settings button, then select Account Settings from the menu and click Add.

Input your full name, email address and email password (your NetID password) in the respective fields. Click Next-> to proceed.

Windows - Step 2

Using a process called AutoDiscovery, Outlook will attempt to connect to your Office 365 inbox. You may see several pop-up screens asking for you to enter you full email address and password. Do so, and be sure to check “remember my password” on the screens. When the setup is complete, your will see check marks across the board, a successful setup message and the “Next->” button will become clickable. Click it to continue.

Windows - Step 3

You will need to re-launch Outlook to load the profile. Please note that upon first launch, Outlook will function a little slowly as it is setting up a local copy of your inbox.

Macintosh - Step 1

When you first open Outlook 2011, you will be greeted with the welcome splash screen.

Click Add Account to proceed and then click Add Exchange Account.

If you area adding a second account in Outlook 2011, you can get to the add account screen by clicking the tools menu item, then select Accounts to open the current accounts window. Click the plus button and select exchange to add a new account.

Macintosh - Step 2

Enter your full email address, select Username and Password from the authentication method and enter your full email address for Username and you NetID password for the password. Make sure the Configure Automatically box is checked.

Macintosh - Step 3

You will get a pop-up notice stating that Outlook is being redirected to the autodiscover server. This is normal. Be sure to check “Always use my response for this server” and click allow. The AutoDiscover server in question allow Outlook to find your inbox Office 365 inbox and connect to it.

You will be connected. Please note that upon first launch, Outlook will function a little slowly as it is setting up a local copy of your inbox.
