Setting up email in iOS

Setting up E-mail on iOS

This tutorial applies to the following operating system(s):

 Mobile iOS

Overview:

After completion, you will have your email account set up on your iOS mobile device.

U of I email can be synced to an iOS device for mobile access to your account. This tutorial will assist you in syncing your Exchange email to your iPhone or iPad.


Step 1

Staff, faculty and students can easily add their University of Idaho email account to their iOS device, allowing you to check email on the go. The process is the same for both iPhones and iPads and for both staff and student accounts - simply substitute your email address (@vandals.uidaho.edu vs @uidaho.edu) as relevant. Please be sure you are running to most recent version of iOS on your device.

Power on your iOS device and select the Settings icon from the home screen 




Step 2

From the general settings screen, select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.


Step 3

Select Add Account.



Step 4

From the list of possible accounts, select Microsoft Exchange.


Step 5

Enter your Account Information in the fields.

  • Email: Your full email address (eg. jvandal@uidaho.edu or vand1234@vandals.uidaho.edu)
  • Domain: Leave this field blank
  • Username: Your full email (eg. jvandal@uidaho.edu or vand1234@vandals.uidaho.edu)
  • Password: Your corresponding email password
  • Description: How the account will be named in your iPhone Mail App. (eg. UI Staff Email, or UI Mail)

Enter the information and press Next. A new field titled “Server” will pop up and need to be filled in. Enter outlook.office365.com into the server field and press the save button.

*NOTE* Some phones may have trouble connecting to the server. If your phone fails to connect to outlook.office365.com, please try and use the server name m.outlook.com.


Step 6

Your iPhone/iPad may inform you that a security certificate could not be verified — this is normal procedure. Simply accept the certificate if prompted.


Step 7

Your device will check the settings and check-marks will appear next to all the fields if your account information is correct. It will then ask what services you wish to sync, including Mail, Contacts, Calendars and Reminders. Toggle which services you wish to sync to your phone and press the save button at the top right when finished.


Step 8

Your new account will be added to your iPhone and syncing will begin. Please note that, depending on the number of messages in your inbox, syncing emails from the server to your iPhone can take anywhere between 10 minutes to several hours.

You can access the newly-synced account through the Mail app on your iPhone. Simply select it from the home screen and your account will be visible, along with any other email accounts synced to the phone.
