Creating a new folder on the S: drive

After completion, you will understand the UI S-drive folder structure and how to request new folders.

Folders on the S drive are organized in a multi-level structure. This tutorial will explain basic S drive folder structure and how to create new folders on the S drive.

A Quick Note on Folder Structure:

The shared drive has a multi-level folder structure. Every department at the University of Idaho has a main folder at the root of the S drive, such as S:/DepartmentName. This is called the first level.

Under each department folder lies the second level – this is where each department/college/organization is broken down further. For instance, you could have a folder, S:/DepartmentName/financial documents, which is used to store financial information. It is at this second level that folder requests must be made.

Sub-folders for subsequent levels can be created by any user who is given permission by the second-level folder owner.

How to Request a Folder:

To request a folder at the second level, send an email to helpdesk@uidaho.edu and include the full file path of the new folder (eg. S:/DepartmentName/NewFolder) as well as who will be the administrator of the folder.

Along with the folder, a control group is created with the owner of the folder set as the administrator of the group. This group controls folder access. The administrator can add people into the control group to grant folder access through the Account Management page, or ITS can assist in giving users permissions.

What if I need to change the owner of the folder?

To request a change in folder ownership, simply send an email with the request to the Help Desk. We will contact the new owner to confirm they wish to take over responsibilities and make the change.
