The University of Idaho maintains file services available for personal file storage called the “U: drive.” This space is not only provided for convenience but because it is centrally managed, audited, monitored and backed up it is required by University policy to place sensitive and confidential information there. As the space is centrally managed there are a few guidelines to follow when using the space.
Can the data be stored on the S: drive instead?
If you are a University of Idaho employee, it is preferable to store University work material on your department’s shared space under the S: drive. The ITS Help Desk can even provide separate space and control directly for you to the space. The benefits are the files are easily transferable to other employees who may need them. Please contact our office for additional information on this service.
What TO use personal space for?
-Files for University related work, either academic or for University employment.
-All confidential information. All personal space is setup so only your personal account can access the information. This is also a requirement from the
Administrative Procedures Manual (APM). No sensitive data can be stored on a local computer.
What NOT TO use personal space for?
-System images or copies of applications. Do not store OS images, system images or copies of downloaded software on the shared space. If you require a space for these types of files, please contact the
ITS Help Desk by email or phone: 208-885-HELP (4357).
-Files not related to the University mission, or your academic pursuits. These include non-work, or non-coursework, related music files, images, movies, etc.
What will happen when my personal shared space quota is filled?
You may contact the ITS Help Desk to request additional space. There may be a charge associated with increases over the default quota. The Help Desk will request the space be only used for academic or work-related purposes. For additional information on process contact the ITS Help Desk.
