Pin Removal
On February 19, 2013, the PIN authentication system will no longer work to log into VandalWeb.
This decision has been made by a cross departmental committee, which has been working on improving data security across campus with removal of the outdated PIN authentication processes as the major focus. The PIN, a 6 character password, used in conjunction with a person’s V# or student ID# provided access to set NetID passwords, access student registration data, employment records, grading processes and much more. This level of access requires a much more robust authentication method to be put in place. The PIN will be phased out starting at the beginning of 2013. Below is a brief timeline of the major events:
- January 8, 2013: Students, staff, and faculty will receive initial notice about the PIN removal. Customers using the PIN after this date will find a 30 second delay before being logged in.
- January 28, 2013: VandalWeb users that are still using the PIN to authenticate will receive directed emails reminding them to switch to their Active Directory credentials.
- February 19, 2013: PIN will no longer be usable to log into VandalWeb. Customers must use their NetID accounts. Any other applications using the PIN must have converted to using NetID.
How do I access VandalWeb now?
For a few years VandalWeb has been accessible by using your NetID. This will be the only authentication method for accessing VandalWeb once the PIN is removed. If you use the NetID now, or start using it from this point forward, you should not notice the PIN removal.
What is a NetID
The NetID is your ITS provided computer account. This same credential system is used to access employee email, Banner, campus computer labs, wireless and of course VandalWeb.
How will we reset passwords once the PIN goes away?
ITS has a new security profile system in place for your NetID account. With this system you can set a security password and a registered alternative account or device. By clicking on the ‘click here to reset your password’ link on the support site, you will be able to have a code sent to an alternate email account, texted to your phone, or receive it through a voice call. For more information on the security profile visit the support site.
You can read about the new security profile and the steps you will need to take to set up your security profile and use it to reset your NetID password.
Who do I contact for assistance with NetID password resets?
For assistance with NetID or with the password reset process, please contact the ITS Help Desk by email at helpdesk@uidaho.edu or by phone at (208) 885-HELP (4357). Additional information is available on the support site.
