Self-Help: Conserving Print Pages

Conserving Print Pages

This tutorial applies to the following operating system(s):

Windows        Macintosh

If you find yourself running low on print pages or just want to conserve the number of pages you use, the following tips and tricks will help you get the most out of your print quota. Remember, you can always buy more print pages if needed.

Don't Print to a Color Printer

Prints made at a color printer cost you 20 print pages on your quota, regardless if the document itself is color or not. While no printers automatically default to printing on the color printer, it is still a good habit to quickly check the printer you are printing to. This information can be found at the top of most print-screen applications.

Print Double-Sided

On Windows:

Printing your documents double-sided is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to save print pages. Since you are using only on sheet of physical paper, but printing on both sides, you effectively get two for the price of one and twice as many print pages!

On a Windows machine, you can print double-sided by taking the following steps:

1.) Open the document you wish to print.

2.) Press CTRL-P or select Print from the File menu.

3.) Click the Properties button.

4.) Check the box next to Print on Both Sides. Leave the other settings as they are. Your settings should match those shown at right.

5.) Click OK and then click OK again to print.

Trouble shooting: If you do not see the Print on Both Sided check box, make sure the Finishing tab is selected at the top of the window.

Print Double-Sided

On Macintosh:

In an Apple Mac computer, print double-sided by taking the following directions:

1.) Open the document you wish to print.

2.) Press Apple-P or select Print from the File menu.

3.) Select Layout from the scroll bar

4.) Highlight the radio button beside Long-Edge Binding
5.) Click Print

Print Multiple PowerPoint Slides on 1 Page

PowerPoint slides are generally small enough to fit several on one page, but are printed one slide per page by default. You can easily change this and, combined with dual-sided printing, can easily save a ton of pages.

On a Windows machine, navigate to file->print and from the print window and select the full-page slide option to change the number of slides per page.

On a Mac, simply navigate to file->print and from the print window select the slide show option, which allows you to select how many slides you wish to print per page.

Print Page Ranges

If you only need a certain part of a document, you can specify Word to print out only a subsection of pages, or individual pages. This can save pages, especially for you only need a few pages from a large document. You can specify to print a page range the following ways:

On a Windows machine, on the print window, simply type in the page range you wish to print. alternatively, you can specify specific pages to print by separating them with commas (eg. 1,5,23,283).

On a Mac, from the print window check the radio box next to page range and enter the start and end page.
