Self-Help: Finding your MAC Address

Finding your MAC Address

Overview:

This tutorial will walk you through how to locate your device’s MAC address. Every device has a unique identifier for its network adapters. This id is called the media access control address, or MAC address.  This 12 digit code is made up of letters and numbers, and is usually separated by colons, periods or dashes. A MAC address can be used to identify your device and register it for University network access.
To find this address, follow the correct instructions for your device type.




Windows


Windows 8 Search cmd

Step 1

For Windows, open the start menu and type, cmd. Click on cmd to open it in a new window.


CMD ipconfig /all

Step 2

Enter ipconfig /all into the window and press enter.


CMD Ethernet Adapter Ethernet

Step 3

Scroll up and find the correct header based on your connection type.

Wired connections will be called an Ethernet Adapter. Wireless connections will be called a Wireless LAN Adapter.


Windows Physical Address

Step 4

Then, you should see your MAC address listed under Physical Address.


Mac/OSX


Mac Network Settings

Step 1

In OSX, click on the Apple icon in the top right.

Open System Preferences, and select Network Preferences.


Mac Network Settings Ethernet

Step 2

Select the connection type from the left. For wireless, select Wi-Fi or Airport. For wired connections, select Ethernet.

Click on Advanced in the lower right corner.

Select the Hardware tab and the MAC address will be listed here.


Apple iOS

For iOS devices, open Settings.

Open the General menu.

Select About, scroll down to Wi-Fi Address. Your device’s MAC address is listed here.


Android

Step 1

For Android devices, note that these instructions may vary between Android versions and manufacturers.

Open the Settings menu.

Scroll down and select About Phone/Tablet.

Open Status, and find the Wi-Fi MAC address field.
