Connecting to Ethernet

This tutorial will guide you in finding your computer's Ethernet MAC address and wallplate ID and connecting your workstation to the wired internet at the University of Idaho.

Connecting your device to wired internet access

In order to obtain wired internet access on your desktop or laptop machine, your computer will need to be registered and its MAC address needs to be properly configured for the correct wallplate it is plugged in to.

Since both of these changes need to be made on ITS system end, please gather both pieces of information and email them, along with your request to have your machine registered for wired internet access, to helpdesk@uidaho.edu.

How to find your MAC address

The MAC (or media access control) address is a unique identifier for each one of your internet connections. You can have multiple MAC’s on your machine (for example, one for your wireless connection and one for wired). If you have more than one internet connection method, you will want to make sure to provide your wired MAC address, which can be found by the following ways.

On a Windows machine

Open the start menu and search for the command prompt by typing cmd into the search box, then click on the icon to launch the program.

(Note: in Windows XP, you will need to navigate from the start menu to all program->accessories->command prompt)

Once the program launches, type in the command ipconfig /all and a list of all your network connections will scroll. Find the entry titled Ethernet Adapter Local Area Network. The second entry under this heading will be called the physical address and be of the form XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX. This is your wired MAC address.

On an Apple Macintosh machine

Open up your system preferences and click the network button. Select your Ethernet connection and click the advanced button, then click the hardware tab on the new window to find your MAC address.

The prompt will stay up and the question will be added to your list. Continue to add up to three questions. Once you have finished, click the "close" button to close the security question window and then click the link for "Security Contacts" to continue.

Finding your wallplate ID

A wallplate ID identifies each port on the UI network. It consists of a building number, a closet letter, the room number, the wallplate in the room and the port in the wallplate. An example is “123 A 456 01 B”. This port is the middle port on the #1 wallplate in room 456 (closet A identifies the location the wallplate is patched to) of the building 123. Most wallplates have a small sticker identifying the wallplate on either the top or side.

With both your wired MAC address and Wallplate ID in place, simply email helpdesk@uidaho.edu and our TSR’s will do the rest to register your machine and make sure it is set to the correct Virtual Network in relation to your wallplate ID.
