Kathryn Schiffelbein, American Language and Culture Program Coordinator
Kathryn Schiffelbein
Coordinator, American Language & Culture Program Kathryn Schiffelbein has her master’s degree in adult education from the University of Idaho and a certificate in teaching English as a second language. She assists ALCP students with visa and academic issues, cultural differences and travel plans. She also coordinates and leads cultural activities for all ALCP students throughout the year. During her free time she enjoys listening to music, watching movies with her husband and surfing in the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Laila Cornwall
Laila Cornwall
ALCP STUDENT ADVISOR, American Language & Culture Program; Laila Cornwall earned her Bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences and Master’s Degree in Business Administration through the Executive MBA Program at the University of Idaho. She was born and raised in Denmark and has lived in Moscow, Idaho since 1996. Laila assists ALCP students with visa and academic issues, cultural differences, travel plans as well as adjusting to college life at the University of Idaho. She also coordinates and leads cultural activities for ALCP students throughout the year. In her free time she enjoys reading, sewing, and spending time with her family doing many outdoor activities including camping, hiking, biking and fishing.

Kate Hellman
Kate Hellmann
Master Teacher, American Language & Culture Program Kate Hellmann is currently working on her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction here at the University of Idaho. She holds an M.A. from Iowa State University in TESL/applied linguistics. At the UI, Kate also received bachelor’s degrees in English and Spanish. Kate has taught beginning through advanced ESL and worked with international teaching assistants at both Iowa State University and later at Des Moines Area Community College. She has also studied and taught at Universidad del Pais Vasco in Bilbao, Spain. Her research interests include advanced academic literacy for international graduate students at American universities, CALL, and how university writing centers can best serve international students. She is originally from North Central Idaho. In her spare time, Kate enjoys camping, hiking, biking, rafting and spending time with her family and friends.

Adeyinka Kayode-Papoola
ALCP Instructor, Adeyinka is a graduate student in the TESL program at the University of Idaho. She will be graduating in December 2011. She is from Nigeria in West Africa and taught English there for 15 years. She enjoys learning about the teaching methods in various cultures. As an ESL speaker, she finds the process of second language acquisition very interesting and rewarding (to the ESL teachers). She loves travelling and has been to Britain, Germany and the United Arab Emirates. She also loves spending time with her family.

Barbara
Barbara Keyes
ALCP Instructor A native of Michigan, Barbara Keyes received her B.A. degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. After spending some time in the elementary classroom, she worked with an international organization, eventually spending several years in Europe. After returning to the United States, Ms. Keyes obtained her M.A. Degree from Northern Illinois University. A move to multicultural Canada eventually led her to Okanagan University College in British Columbia, where she received her TESL certification. Subsequently, she taught in the ESL department at OUC, as well as Trend College, before moving to Moscow, Idaho, where she began teaching in the ALCP program in 2002.

Diana Candia
Diana Candia
ALCP Instructor Diana received her Master’s degree in TESL from Gonzaga University in the state of Washington. She has taught English, as well as Spanish, in the United States and in Peru. She greatly enjoys working with an international community and is interested in learning about other cultures and ways of life. She find students to be the greatest source of knowledge. Diana also likes traveling, and so far has visited Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Bolivia.

Laurel Gilbert-Wilder
Laurel Gilbert-Wilder
ALCP Instructor Laurel Gilbert-Wilder got her master’s degree in teaching English as a second language from the University of Idaho in 2005 and has been teaching at the ALCP since then. Previously, she taught ESL part-time in Boise State University’s community education program and worked as a bilingual (Spanish) consultant for the Idaho Department of Labor. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Brigham Young University-Utah, where she also studied Spanish and Russian. While serving as a missionary in Chile during a year-and-a-half break from school, she became fascinated in working with people from different culture and language backgrounds. Currently she is especially interested in intercultural communication, and has had great experiences designing activities in which her ALCP students can participate in regular University of Idaho classes.

Sarah Silflow
Sarah Silflow
ALCP Instructor Sarah, originally from Idaho, has also lived in St. Petersburg, Russia. She received her B.A. in International Studies from the University of Idaho in 2009 and has studied Russian and Spanish. She completed her M.A. TESL in 2011 and is excited to work at the ALCP. In her free time she enjoys being outdoors, exercising, baking and watching detective shows with her husband. Someday she hopes to travel the world, and see the countries and cultures of her international students.

Tara Sipiora
Tara Sipiora
ALCP Instructor Tara, born in Boise, Idaho, got her B.S. in Communication Studies (with writing minor) from the University of Idaho in 2009. She completed her M.A. TESL in 2011 and is excited to be working at the ALCP with the variety of language learners. She has traveled to Spain, Canada, and many parts of the United States. She is also a language student, speaking some Spanish and Nepali, and starting to learn Igbo and pigeon languages. She enjoys writing short stories and reading modern and classic literature.

Madison Bestebreur
Madison Bestebreur
AmeriCorps Service Member, ISSFS and American Language & Culture Program Madison Bestebreur received her B.A. in Political Science (with an emphasis in Global Politics) and a Second Major in French from Washington State University. During the spring of 2010, Madison studied abroad in Rabat, Morocco. She has also traveled to Spain, France and Kenya. Madison enjoys introducing new students to the University of Idaho during orientation and participating in fun cultural activities with the students during the sessions.
