Dr. John L. Phillips
2011 Austin Distinguished Lecture in Science
The Robert B. and Floretta F. Austin Memorial Fund supports the annual Robert and Floretta Austin Distinguished Lecture in Science, which is one of the college's signature events. Learning opportunities outside the classroom are an important part of a university education, and the Austin Lecture allows students and faculty to interact with scientists from outside the university. Past lecture presenters have included Todd Kuiken, a physician and biomedical engineer who has done ground-breaking work developing thought-controlled prosthetic devices; Carolyn Porco, an astrophysicist who won international recognition for her work on the Cassini mission to Saturn; and John Phillips, an astronaut who spoke about his missions on the space shuttle and the International Space Station.
