President's Message

President Chuck StabenOur great university has been bringing about positive change for 125 years. The University of Idaho has been dedicated to inspiring individual futures that have shaped our state, region, nation and world.

The creation of land-grant universities was a visionary move that helped the United States become a world leader. When President Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862, he recognized this saying, “The land-grant university system is being built on behalf of the people who have invested in these public institutions their hopes, their support and their confidence,” Land-grant universities met state needs with classes in “scientific and classical studies…agriculture and the mechanic arts…in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life.” Land-grant universities educate students who contribute to their states and to the United States, economically and as engaged citizens.
Today, particularly after the recession of 2008, the United States looks to its public universities to provide the education essential for employment, to cultivate leaders, and to provide the research and research capacity to ensure global economic competitiveness.

At this juncture in the 21st Century, it’s time to reconfirm our commitment to future generations. In doing so, we can move our university – Idaho’s national land grant, founding, comprehensive, and constitutionally recognized university! -- from great to exceptional. That’s the aim of our capital campaign: Inspiring Futures: Invest in the University of Idaho.

Our goal of $225 million will help us expand opportunities for students and enhance our contributions to America’s progress in science, research, business, law, medicine, the arts, and other vital disciplines.

  • Students who might never make it to college will graduate with 21st Century skills thanks to scholarship funds.
  • They’ll benefit from the world-class faculty and staff that we’ll be better able to hire and retain.
  • All will benefit from enrichment of our best programs and co-curricular activities.
  • Teaching, learning, and research will improve through building 21st century classrooms, laboratories, and other facilities.

The importance of your participation in our campaign cannot be overstated. Every holder of a University of Idaho degree, every Vandal family member, and every friend of the university is critically important. We need your help. Inspiring Futures: Invest in the University of Idaho provides the fuel for our continuing ascent as one of America’s great public universities.

I’m proud to be investing in the future of this remarkable institution and in the future of our people. I encourage you to become an investor, too. Sincerely,

Chuck Staben
