Lead-Containing Materials Management

What we do to manage lead-based paint

EHS is responsible for testing paint in and on buildings in cases where it is reported to be deteriorated, damaged, or otherwise failing, as well as areas where remodel, repair, or other construction is planned. If a paint sample is positive for lead, we will work with Facilities to safely remove the paint from the building.

How you can help

If you notice failing paint in a UI facility, please report the issue to EHS. EHS will respond quickly and determine if the paint contains lead. If lead is identified, the paint can then be handled correctly and safely by trained staff or contractors performing the work.

If abatement work is taking place, DO NOT enter the work area. Unauthorized entry can expose you and others to lead dust that can be tracked out of the containment zone. Staff/contractors are required to capture all dust generated through use of enclosures, ventilation systems, HEPA vacuums or other methods to protect you and others from exposure.

For further information about lead hazards, please see the reference links on this page.
