Install Sophos on OSX

Overview

For personal machines (not owned by UI), Sophos now offers a free version of Home. Download it straight from their website.

ITS offers Sophos Antivirus at no extra cost to all employees and students at the University of Idaho to help protect their machines from viruses and malware. This tutorial will walk you through installing the Sophos antivirus client on a UI owned Macintosh machine.

Step 1

Before downloading the software, you will need to agree to the University of Idaho’s antivirus agreement. To do this, log in to the Account Management site using your MyUidaho username and password.

Log into Account Management.
Log into University of Idaho Account Management.

Step 2

Once logged in, click University Software in the menu on the left, and then click the UI Antivirus link. This will bring up the anti virus agreement — click the I agree button to gain access to download Sophos.

Agree to the license.
Click the I agree button to gain access to download Sophos.

Step 3

To begin installation of the Sophos Antivirus Client on your Mac, verify that you meet the system requirements (Mac OS X 10.5+), and have downloaded the proper installation package (.dmg file) from the software page. A link to the software page can be found on the Account Management site on the UI Anti-Virus agreement page.

Download the appropriate Sophos client
Make sure to download the mac version of Sophos for University machines. Remember, if you are installing on a PERSONAL machine, you'll be downloading the Anti-Virus directly from the Sophos webpage.

Step 4

Double-click the file in your downloads folder. This should open the installer.

If a folder appears on your desktop instead of running an installation process, double-click to open it, and then double-click the icon to open the installer.

Run the download .dmg file when it has completed downloading.
Once downloaded, double-click the icon to run the installer.

Step 5

Next, the installation wizard will provide you with important information pertinent to installation. Please read the information carefully and continue.

Then read and agree to the terms of use and license agreement.

Agree to the installation contract.
Make sure to agree to this license as well.

Step 6

You may be prompted to enter your computer administration password to begin the installation process; key in your password and select “OK” to continue.

The installation should begin, marked by a blue progress bar. Once complete, a success message will appear and you can close then delete the installer.

This should be the success message you see when it has finished installing.
After Sophos has run it's installation process, marked by a blue progress bar, you should see this success message.

Step 7

Sophos will now be installed on your computer and will being passively scanning your machine.
