This tutorial applies to the following operating system(s):
Windows - Macintosh
Often when you report a spam, phishing or false positive (incorrectly marked as spam message), ITS will ask you to provide the message as an attachment, or the full email headers, which contain technical data about the email message in question. Below, you will find way to obtain these full email headers in Outlook and OWA.
Email Reporting in OWA
To report a suspicious or unwanted message, instead of adding the full email header, drag and drop the suspicious email into a new email.
Once dragged into the new email, it should appear as an attachment. Please also include whether or not you replied to the suspicious email, clicked any links it contained, or took any action the suspicious email suggested. This will give ITS the information we need for securing your account against subsequent attacks.
Email Headers in Outlook
With Outlook (either 2010/2013 for Windows or 2011 for Mac) open, find the message you wish to obtain the full email headers for in your Inbox and double-click the message to open it in a separate message window.
In the new message window that comes up, click the File tab, then click the properties button to open the message properties window.
There, you will find the full email headers at the bottom under the label Internet Headers. You can drag-select (or click into the headers box and press the keyboard shortcut ctrl + a) and copy-paste these headers into another message to ITS.
