Green Building Program
The Integrated Research and Innovation Center project team is targeting LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED standards not only recognize environmental sustainability, but also encourage energy efficiency, reduced water consumption and other qualities that save money and promote the health and safety of people who use the building.
The project team has established six areas in which to emphasize sustainability for the IRIC: Education, Flexibility, Energy, Operations and Maintenance, Water and Site, and Landscape. Additional sustainability considerations include Human Experience, Transportation, Materials and Furniture, and Benchmarking.
As a LEED Gold building, the IRIC also will serve as a live teaching lab by demonstrating systems and displaying analytical systems data.
University of Idaho Climate Action Plan has targeted LEED Gold certification for all new buildings constructed since 2012 and targets a carbon-neutral campus by 2030.
