Paradise Creek Ecosystem Restoration and Stadium Drive Extension

The Paradise Creek Ecosystem Restoration project is in cooperation with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the University of Idaho and the City of Moscow. A combination of new channel construction, riparian habitat improvements to existing channels, and access pathways are proposed as a means to restore more natural wetland features in the area, provide a naturalized greenbelt transition linking the University of Idaho to the City of Moscow, support research efforts and student learning opportunities and to help improve the overall water quality of Paradise Creek.

The Paradise Creek Ecosystem Restoration project is one component of a larger set of improvements in the North Campus Neighborhood of the University of Idaho first conceptualized and developed as a part of the University’s Long Range Campus Development Plan (LRCDP) efforts in the mid-to late 1990’s. This vision for the development and improvement of the northern edge of campus was folded into the LRCDP master plan published in the year 2000. The improvements envisioned included:

  • The construction of a Student Recreation Center

  • The construction of new residential living facilities

  • Relocation and daylighting of Paradise Creek – the Paradise Creek Ecosystem Restoration project

  • Construction of a new campus entry and access way in alignment with Peterson Drive to the north and Stadium Way to the south

Many of these efforts and improvements are now complete, to include the construction of the Student Recreation Center and the 600 bed Living Learning Center. Other efforts are in active stages of development and design.

The reach of Paradise Creek flowing through the North Campus Neighborhood was rerouted in the early 1900s and covered by the Paradise Creek Street conveyance in the 1960s. The Paradise Creek watershed is approximately 35 square miles. On the University of Idaho campus at Line Street, the creek enters a fully enclosed concrete channel for approximately 1,100 feet before resurfacing west of Rayburn Street.
