The 17th Annual Student Employee of the Year (SEOY) ceremony celebrated 37 outstanding nominees from all over campus and the local community. This event was held at the Student Union Building in the ballroom on April 10th, 2013.
Entertainment for this event was provided by Beta Sigma Sinfonia. They performed the songs “Hello MaryLou” and “I’ve been working on the railroad.” Their performance was a huge success and we thank them for taking time to provide us with such wonderful entertainment.
To help celebrate the achievement of the student employee, Doug Baker, Provost and Executive Vice President of the University of Idaho; Bruce Pitman, Dean of Students for the University of Idaho; Gary Riedner, Moscow City Supervisor; Gina Taruscio, Executive Director of the Moscow Chambers of Commerce; and Hannah Davis, ASUI President, were gracious enough to take time to attend our event, as VIP guests, and speak in appreciation for our student employees. We are very appreciative of their support to our program.
The judges for this event come from various areas on and off campus. There are five areas we select our judges from. Tyson Drew served as our Exempt judge for the year. Our off campus judge was Joe Knickerbocker. Hannah Davis, our ASUI president, served as our student judge and Meggie Cafferty served as our Classified Judge. Jacklinn Bennett served as this year’s Faculty judge. We thank our judges for taking time to support our program.
The winner of this year’s program works in Student Involvement as a Student Coordinator. She has participated in events such as Make a Difference Day involving over 500 students, Student Achievement Awards in Leadership and Service and helps oversee the 200 student organizations on campus. In addition, she has also helped with workshops dealing with time management skills, event planning, team building and leadership transitions. She also does a variety of behind the scenes work to ensure that students are getting the most out of their college experience. We are honored to have Laura Exley as the 17th University of Idaho Student Employee of the Year.
Each year, every Idaho institution that is a member of the National Student Employment Association holds their own Student Employee of the Year competition and forwards their finalist for competition at the state level. The nomination is judged and a determination is made of a state winner. This year the University of Idaho is very proud to say that our finalist, Laura Exley, has also been selected as the State of Idaho Student Employee of the Year.
Our first runner up this year is an employee for the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. She is the lead writer of web features and covers various stories involving the college. She is an active member in both the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Phi Eta Sigma while still holding a GPA of 3.9. Lisa Laughlin was awarded first runner up in the 17th annual University of Idaho Student Employee of the Year.
The second runner up this year is a clerical aide at Gritman Medical Center. She is always stepping in to help and always has a smile on her face. She balances being a full time student, running cross country as well as track and field while still holding two part time jobs. Her determination and hard work led to being honored on the 2012 Fall Western Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Emily Paradis is the 17th annual Student Employee of the Year’s second runner up.
