The University of Idaho recognizes that success in recruitment and retention often depends on the opportunity to facilitate employment assistance of an accompanying spouse. Decisions to accept a University position often are made by couples based on the availability of employment for both individuals in areas related to their respective fields of expertise. In an effort to assist the University in attracting, hiring, and retaining the best faculty and staff, the Department of Human Resources has created the Dual Career Service program to respond to this need and provide assistance and support during employment searches.
This program is designed to help the recruit’s spouse in networking and locating employment opportunities in the Moscow area within the first year of arriving in the community. While employment is not guaranteed, Employment Services will do everything possible to contribute to the successful recruitment of dual career couples.
To be eligible for dual career services a person must...
- Must be a spouse of a University of Idaho faculty or staff member.
- Must be part of a recruitment effort or have lived in the area for less than one year.
- Must be willing to look at career opportunities in the surrounding communities as well as at the University of Idaho.
Dual career services are provided by Employment Services in Human Resources. Services are not available to students, temporary employees or fellows. Employment Services does not serve as an employment agency and does not guarantee employment.
Program services are customized to best serve the career needs of each person. These services may include:
- Job search assistance for up to one year
- Providing confidential career assessment and counseling
- Resume writing assistance
- Assistance with interviewing techniques
- Guidance to appropriate resources for career exploration and planning
- Current data on how best to find job openings
- Giving information about employment opportunities at the University of Idaho and other colleges and universities and other employers in the surrounding area
- Brokering creative strategies for developing employment solutions with the University.
Appointment of a Spouse Without Open Search
If a spouse meets the criteria of a soon-to-be open position, the appointment may be filled without an open search. The unit that is creating the new position will evaluate the spouse’s qualifications as it would for any vacancy. Such review should include at a minimum, a review of a resume or curriculum vitae, contacting references and an interview. The person’s qualifications should be evaluated against the qualifications of recent hires. In the case of faculty hires, the department faculty must be involved in the evaluation as they would in any faculty hire.
Waiver of an open search process must be requested in writing and include supporting documentation showing the evaluation and endorsement of the hiring department. The request will be approved by the Human Rights Compliance Office upon the endorsement of Human Resources and the Provost or the Vice President responsible for the hiring unit’s division. Any hiring of a family member must be accomplished in compliance with existing University policy. (See FSH 6240B).
