Scholarship Progress
Each
year, the University Honors Program offers a number of scholarships
for Idaho residents and out-of-state tuition waivers to
non-resident students and international students. Fall 2008 (and also fall 2007/spring 2008) awards
to entering freshmen are renewable, contingent on a student’s satisfactory progress
toward the course and credit requirements specified below, while maintaining
an overall GPA of 3.3.
The course and credit requirements for this scholarship specify that you register as a full-time student for fall 2008 classes between March 28 and May 15, and complete on average three honors credits per semester [for example, at least three credits by the end of the first semester, six credits total by end of second semester, and so on] to achieve a minimum of 12 graded honors credits by the end of your fourth semester—the 12 credits are to include at least three humanities credits, three social science credits, and three science credits. After successfully meeting this 12-credit requirement, you must then complete, on average, two to three honors credits each semester for a minimum of five honors credits each year until 22 honors credits are achieved by the end of your eighth semester. The 22 credits include a minimum of six credits at the 300-400 level. An honors course in quantitative reasoning is required and fulfilled by completing honors Math 315, “Topics in Pure Mathematics,” or by completing a regular section of Philosophy 202, “Symbolic Logic” (via use of the Honors Elective Agreement). Please also note that UHP scholarship support may, with the UHP director’s permission, be applied to one to two semesters of out of state or study abroad academic exchange (excluding support that is comprised of a waiver of nonresident tuition).
We encourage you to complete requirements to achieve the University Honors Program Certificate. Note that some honors courses are offered once a year, and you therefore must plan ahead to arrange class schedules to accommodate required courses. The certificate is the program’s highest distinction and is noted on your academic transcript. We advise that you start out by completing 12 honors credits by the end of your second or third semester in order to make strong progress toward achieving the certificate. The honors certificate is awarded to students who, upon graduation, have completed 27 credits of required honors courses, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in those classes. Each year approximately 30 students are awarded the certificate and are recognized at a distinctive ceremony held just prior to the university’s commencement in May. Students who complete the requirements of this scholarship but who do not receive the UHP Certificate, shall receive the UHP Core Award, an honor that also is noted on your academic transcript.
Note that renewals of scholarship support
are determined and processed each semester, but renewal letters are processed each June, following evaluation
of coursework completed and grades received.
