Competition for the 2008 [start 2010] Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships is now open.

This scholarship allows the recipient to attend a university in a foreign
country for an academic year. The stipend is around $25,000 plus other benefits. Applicants must have
completed two years of college by the start date of the award (September 1, 2010) [most successful applicants have been entering their senior year by the start date of the scholarship]. Other than that, there is only a language
restriction for countries where the native language is not English.

Some additional restrictions are:

cannot have lived in the country for a year previously

cannot have a parent or grandparent in Rotary.

Applications can be downloaded from the WEB site:
www.rotary.org (key in Scholarship in the search engine)

The timetable for completed applications is to contact Dr. Sturgul well before the following deadline:
due into local club (Rotary Club of Moscow): late March 2008
due into Scholarship Committee (sent by Rotary Club of Moscow): April 2008
Final interviews typically are held in Spokane on the 3rd or 4th Saturday in May 2008.

If successful, the starting date for most scholarships is 1 Sept. 2010 (not
2009). However, ff the person selects a university in the southern hemisphere and classes
begin in Febr. or March (Australia), the start date would be Febr. 2010 (else, Sept. 2010 or when the university commences its academic year).

FYI: Nancy Patterson is currently on a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, in Guatemala. Amy Shipman just returned from a scholarship, and Chris Chandler is scheduled to go to Zimbabwe. UI nominees have been quite successful!

Our Rotary District (5080) has three different types
of scholarships.  These are:
Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships.  These are for one year (9 months in
some cases) and carry a stipend of approximately $25,000.  Only one of these is
available for our District (approx. 63 clubs).  Qualifications include:
high scholarship, at least 2nd year status and language proficiency if the
country or countries selected do not have English as their native
language. The scholarship can be taken in any one of over 130 countries.
This is the largest financial scholarship in the world.
Scholarships are to begin: 1 Sept. 2010 for universities in the northern
hemisphere.  This date may vary for universities in the southern
hemisphere

Possibly: Scholarships to one of the Rotary Centers for International Studies.
This is for two years and must be taken at one of the various Rotary
Centers.  These are at:  Duke & Univ. of North Carolina; International
Christian University, Japan; Sciences Po, Paris, France; Universidad del
Salvador, Buenos Aires; Univ. of Bradford, England; Univ. of California,
Berkeley; Univ. of Queensland, Australia.  Stipend includes tuition, fees

Further notes/details:

Each application needs to be endorsed by the sponsoring club and submitted to John Sturgul, Chair, Rotary District 5080 Scholarship Committee.

Please be careful to read the applications carefully. It is essential that the applicants answer every question completely and submit all requested documents together with the completed form:

All university or college transcripts (original copies)

Select 5 institutions for their year of study abroad - no more than two may be in the same country

Three letters of reference, which may be sent directly to the Scholarship Committee Chair or together with the application in sealed envelopes.

For countries where English is not the main language, an additional reference from a foreign language instructor is required. This is not required for the cultural scholarship, since this scholarship is designed to provide language instruction in the host country.
