RE: New Student Orientation for Fall Semester 2008(Note: the letter copied below is nearly identical to the information that you shall receive by mail if you have been admitted to the University Honors Program.)

August 1, 2008

Dear New Honors Program Member:

I hope that you are enjoying your summer months and are looking eagerly toward the upcoming school year.  In preparation for fall semester, I would like to let you know about an important event so that you may put it on your calendar: The Honors Program Student Orientation on Sunday, August 24, 2008.

This orientation will be held from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. in the Idaho Commons, Whitewater Room (next to the Food Court).  It will provide a chance to ask any questions that you may have about honors study, hear about upcoming trips and social events, and you will be able to meet the Honors Student Advisory Board, the Honors Program Advisor Cheryl Wheaton, Associate Director Mark Warner, and me.  Three new student representatives to the Honors Student Advisory Board also will be elected at this orientation.  You can learn more about HSAB, especially if you wish to consider running for a place on the board, by visiting the UHP website at www.uidaho.edu/honors_program/hsab.htm  You may also be interested to know that UHP students have established a “UI Honors Program” Facebook group for all members—you are welcome to join this group at www.facebook.com (search under UI Honors Program).

It is very important that you attend this orientation.  If you are unable to attend, it is imperative that you contact the Honors Center (Idaho Commons Bldg., Room 315, or 885-6147 or honors@uidaho.edu) to give us your local address and phone number.  I encourage you to arrange your schedule so that you can take advantage of the honors curriculum by registering for at least one fall semester honors class (http://www.uidaho.edu/honors_program/courseinfo.htm).  If you are not already registered for an honors course,  I advise you in particular to register for an Honors Core Discovery class (Core105, section , Core 116, section , or Core , section , if there is space available), and consider enrolling in one of the other 100-200 level honors courses.  Entering freshmen typically enroll for an average of six honors credits each, in fall semester courses.

By now you should have received information regarding your UI VandalMail account.  The account is automatically created when you are admitted and you should sign up for it as soon as possible.  Your VandalMail email address is the university’s official means of email communication with you. Visit the e-Support web page http://support.uidaho.edu/FAQ/Accounts/Activation.htm to validate your PIN,  change your password to access your new account, and set up your computer lab account.  To do this you will need your student ID number and PIN (both were assigned by the Office of Admissions when you were accepted to UI).  You need to pay tuition and fees, and then get your Vandal card at the Student Union Building.

If you have not received a copy of the New Student Orientation Schedule with all the new student events listed, you will soon.  You can also view the orientation schedule on the web at http://www.students.uidaho.edu/default.aspx?pid=54623.  If you have decided not to attend the university, please contact us as soon as possible, and I also suggest that you inform the Admissions Office at admappl@uidaho.edu

Best wishes for the remainder of the summer.  I look forward to seeing you August 24th.

Sincerely,

Stephan Flores
Director
