University Honors Program Student Jacob Parker Receives Recognition

UI Student Awarded Best Overall Performance at International Conference

December 6, 2005

Moscow, Idaho-Whether he’s representing the University of Idaho at a conference or discovering underground caves in New Mexico, UI student Jake Parker is actively exploring every opportunity presented to him.

Parker from Yokosuka, Japan, by way of Colorado Springs, Colo., earned the Best Overall Performance award while attending a conference at UCLA entitled “The Global Third Way: Pursuing Global Security and Development Goals,” which was sponsored by the Alliance Toward Harnessing Global Opportunities International.

Parker’s activities at the conference, held November 3-5, included debates, resolution writing and committee styled actions, as well as networking with the more than 200 students from around the world. He is a sophomore majoring in international studies with an emphasis on economics. His conference attendance was sponsored by ASUI, UI’s Martin Institute and the UI Office of Academic Affairs.

Because of his success at the conference, he is eligible to compete for one of three spots for an all expense paid trip to Geneva, Switzerland, the headquarters of the U.N., to lobby on behalf of the ATHGO International. The selection is based on the participant’s success at the conference and a post-conference position paper, which Parker has submitted. The selection will be announced in spring 2006.

When he’s not repelling into and exploring underground caves in New Mexico as he did over Thanksgiving Break with three friends, Parker is busy conducting business as the president of the Global Village Community in the UI’s Living Learning Community and as the chair of the ASUI Civic Engagement Board.

ATHGO is a non-governmental organization recognized by the U.N. that works on international educational issues.
