From the Director

Dear New Honors Program Member:

On behalf of the UHP, I want to welcome you again to the UI and to the program; I hope that you are following or have followed the Registration Advice posted under Academics as well as via a link from the main page on this website.

As you anticipate the upcoming school year and look ahead to fall semester, I would like to let you know about an important event: on the Sunday immediately before the start of each fall semester new UHP students are invited to The Honors Program Student Orientation.

It is important that you attend this orientation. If you are unable to attend, please be sure to contact the Honors Program (Idaho Commons Bldg., Room 315, or 885-6147) to give us your local address and phone number.

The orientation is held from noon to 1:30pm in the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC room to be determined). It provides a chance to ask questions about honors study, hear about upcoming leadership retreats and social events, get acquainted with other incoming honors students, and meet the Honors Student Advisory Board, the Honors Program associate director, program advisor, and director. Three new student representatives to the Honors Student Advisory Board are elected at this orientation—members talk with you about HSAB service and leadership.

Another event to call to your attention—the Honors Program Parent Orientation: if your parents are in town on the Friday before the start of fall semester, the UHP associate director, director, and a couple current honors students meet briefly with parents (most likely from 11:45am to 12:15pm in the Teaching and Learning Center, TLC room to be determined), to provide a preview of the fall semester and to answer questions about new students’ transitions to UI and the UHP.

To maintain standing in the University Honors Program, including eligibility to register for spring honors courses, entering first-year UHP students must enroll in at least one fall semester honors course (minimum of three HON-designated credits).  If you are not enrolled in a fall semester honors course as of August 31, you will become inactive and will no longer be listed as a member of the program (and no longer eligible to enroll in honors courses and to receive other program benefits). If you are inactive yet remain interested in the program, you may request consideration for eligibility to register for spring semester honors courses by contacting the UHP director no later than October 31, or you may request reinstatement of membership at the end of the fall semester (with a 3.5 UI institutional GPA).

Best wishes for the remainder of the academic year and/or summer. The UHP director, associate director, and program advisor, and the members of the Honors Student Advisory Board look forward to seeing you at the start of the fall semester. If you have any questions, please send an email to honors@uidaho.edu or give us a call (208-885-6147).
