Admission Criteria

Applicants who wish to be considered for funding are encouraged to apply for admission to the UHP prior to the university's February 15 financial aid deadline. If funding is available, strong applications for admission received after February 15 also are considered for UHP scholarship or WUE-rate tuition waiver support. Typically, all UHP scholarship awards to new, incoming freshmen are offered by March 1; as some awards are declined, then the program will seek to re-award those scholarships to other students. The DEADLINES for applying to the University Honors Program occur on August 15 for enrollment fall semester and January 5 for spring semester; however, registration for fall semester classes begins in late March: please note that the majority of incoming freshmen apply to the UHP prior to February 15.

Applicants are advised to complete an application for admission to the University of Idaho as they proceed with the application for admission to the UHP. To apply for admission to the UHP, select the appropriate "Learn More" option below.

Admission Criteria
Prospective Freshman
Applicants who meet the initial unweighted high school GPA and standardized test score(s) criteria for admission submit four short compositions to describe significant learning experiences and perspectives.
Learn More

Initial application criteria is based on a correlation between your cumulative unweighted accredited high school GPA and an ACT composite score or SAT Reasoning combined critical reading and math score. For example, students with a 28 ACT composite score, or a 1260 SAT combined critical reading and math score, and a 3.77 unweighted accredited high school GPA meet the initial criteria. The correlation is based on a sliding scale: test scores higher than those noted and GPAs below 3.77 may still meet the criteria. Students with higher GPAs may have test scores lower than the examples. If you have taken an ACT or SAT test more than once, use your highest score.

Find out if you meet the initial criteria:
Please enter your unweighted High School GPA:

Enter composite ACT or combined critical reading and math SAT Score (do not factor in or count the writing score component of the SAT:
If you have taken both the ACT and SAT, please use whichever test score is higher

If you are home-schooled or from a non-accredited high school, please follow these alternative instructions.
Transfer Students
Students with a 3.5 college GPA and a grade of B or better in the equivalent of English 102 (or test score exemption for English 102), are considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.
Learn More

Transfer students in good standing in an honors program/college at their previous school are considered for admission based on a 3.5 GPA and review of their previous honors course work.

Honors credits (usually those designated as such on the academic transcript) that transfer are evaluated and with the UHP director's approval may apply toward admission with good standing, and selectively on a course-by-course basis apply toward either the UHP Core Award or UHP Certificate requirement.

Current Students
Students with a 3.5 or higher institutional, cumulative GPA, with the additional requirement of a grade of B or better in English 102, qualify for admission to the UHP, upon application to the program.
Learn More

Current UI students with a 3.5 or higher institutional, cumulative GPA, with the additional requirement of a grade of B or better in English 102, qualify for admission to the UHP, upon application to the program by the deadlines of August 15 for enrollment fall semester and January 5 for spring semester. First-semester students must defer application until the end of that first semester, and may then apply in accordance with the specified criteria.

Students who are currently enrolled in English 102 or whose test scores make them exempt from English 102, will need to submit an essay from a University of Idaho course, or write in response to topics and guidelines provided by the UHP, as part of the application to the program.
