“Flowers... are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty out-values all the utilities of the world.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
About the Herbarium
The University of Idaho Stillinger Herbarium is an international resource for research on the flora of Idaho and the Pacific Northwest. The Herbarium represents an archive of the diversity of Idaho vascular plants, non-vascular plants, fungi, and lichens through space and time. The collection supports research in floristics, systematics, evolution, ecology, and conservation. The collections provide valuable documentation of the changes to our flora as we are faced with human environmental impacts, land use changes, and a changing global climate. The herbarium also supports multiple courses, and we offer hands on botanical training for interested students through directed studies, volunteer, and employment opportunities. Public service activities in the herbarium include plant identification, educational workshops, and seminars.
The Stillinger Herbarium was established in 1892 and is the largest herbarium in Idaho, functioning as the official state repository for plant specimens. The collection consists of more than 200,000 specimens and is currently supported by the University of Idaho and the Charles R. Stillinger Trust.
