About Greek Life at U of I

Meaningful relationships and your connection to a large community will help you be more successful. Fraternities and sororities have been part of campus life since U of I was founded in 1889. Today, roughly a quarter of all students join one of these organizations to discover a community of peers who share similar values, develop strong friendships and make an impact on campus and beyond.

Greek Life at U of I includes Multicultural Greek Council, Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council organizations. All understand the unique value that can come from a sisterhood of women or a brotherhood of men navigating the challenges of college and life in general. Greek Life is something that can’t be matched.

Even though there are hundreds of opportunities for you to engage and get involved on campus, few produce a lifelong return on time and energy quite like joining a Greek chapter. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life invites you to join us and discover where you belong here on campus. Learn more about all Greek organizations and chapters at U of I.

Once immersed in Greek Life at U of I, you’re encouraged to do your best academically, develop strong social and community bonds, empower others and lead with diversity and inclusivity in mind. Read more about the missions and values of U of I’s Greek organizations.

The Benefits of Joining a Greek Chapter

Greek Life shapes your time at U of I, and the friendships you develop become meaningful connections in your life and as you start your career. From your social life on campus to a supportive community, there are many benefits from joining a fraternity or sorority as you begin your journey as a Vandal:

  • Discover a supportive social environment: New experiences can be exciting and nerve-wracking. Make the social and academic transition to college life with the advice and perspectives of your chapter’s members while growing your network, taking part in events, building your confidence and ultimately finding your home away from home.
  • Branch out and lead: Broaden your connections and see how your brotherly or sisterly bonds can have far-reaching effects. U of I’s Greek organizations are involved with events on campus, community service and other philanthropic efforts. Test the boundaries of teamwork while cultivating your leadership and organizational skills in the process.
  • Reach your potential: Studies have shown that graduation rates are higher for fraternity and sorority members than the remaining general college population. Your chapter is highly invested in your academic success, providing scholarships and other incentives like tutoring and study support to keep you on track.
  • Expand your network: Connections from your fraternity or sorority extend beyond campus to U of I alumni and national chapter members. Being a part of a Greek organization gives you a boost as you enter the working world. Leverage your community to land internships or your first full-time job. As an alum, you’ll be able to provide recommendations from your own network and give others a head start on their future.
