About the Tournament:
Larry Hunter, long time Director of Information Services at the UI, passed away in 2008. Larry was an active member of Moscow Central Lions Club and an avid golfer. He was instrumental in building and supporting the UI Men’s Golf Association over many years. Moscow Central Lions, in memory of Larry, held a golf tournament in his honor four years ago. Proceeds from the initial tournaments were dedicated to the UI Golf Course and a commemorative bell was installed on the 13th hole to provide safe play for golfers teeing off. In addition, Larry’s family members and friends have attended several of the Lion’s sponsored tournaments over the past few years. In the spirit of the tournament, and in memory of Larry, the family and friends chose to contribute $30K to the UI Golf Course for the sole purpose of installing forward tee boxes for women, seniors, and youth players. In conjunction with this significant contribution, the UI Golf Course initiated a local campaign for full tee box development and has acquired in excess of $60K for this project. When completed, the enhancements at the UI Golf Course will encourage play at all skill levels and ages.
This year’s tournament (June 22, 2013), is being planned as the formal dedication of the newly designed tee box placements. Larry Hunter’s family and friends are being invited to attend the ceremonies. The tournament this year will be a two-person scramble, with competition divided into handicap flights. Our goal is to have at least 72 players (foursome for each hole). Please pass the word and form your teams now for a great event and a fantastic capital improvement to the UI Golf Course.
Withstanding the test of time, the University of Idaho Golf Course was originally designed by Francis L. James and constructed in 1933. Nestled among the rolling hills of the Palouse, panoramic wheat land vistas change with the seasons from emerald green to amber gold against a mountain backdrop.
This unique course is challenging, offering a variety of shots from uneven lies to elevated and recessed greens. The front nine provides scoring opportunities featuring three par 5's in an open grassland venue. The back nine tightens up into a narrow parkland theme, including two difficult par 3's. The round concludes by running the gauntlet of the last three challenging holes known by locals as "heartbreak ridge."
