The Martin Institute: An International Education

The Martin Institute is a University of Idaho outreach center dedicated to understanding the causes of war, the conditions for peace and the international system. Junior Zachary Lien, 2015 outstanding freshman award winner and scholarship recipient at the UI Martin Institute, believes that history holds the key to a better world.

“The most fascinating aspect of my field of study is the evolution of the international system over the past century and the impact that evolution has had on the United States,” Lien said. “We are living in an incredibly unique and interesting point of history — something I’m reminded of everyday in my classes.”

Although Lien finds his classroom studies engaging, it’s the opportunities he’s had to study abroad that have most influenced how he views the world.

“Each semester, I receive money from the Virginia Mowry Scholarship,” Zachary said. “The scholarship has allowed for me to accumulate less student debt as well as help pay for an Alternative Service Break trip through the university.”

Through the generosity of donors, many students are given the opportunity to travel the globe to learn how they can be a positive influence in the world.

“The Martin Institute for International Studies has provided an education that feeds and expands my passions in a unique and remarkable way,” Lien said. “I am constantly learning more about the world around me in ways that invoke fascination and a desire to contribute.”
