Cultivating Life-Long Learners
Senior Crystal Hernandez is a non-traditional student who grew up reading Voltaire’s Candide and Lettres Philosophique, along with other philosophy books, usually taking them from her grandparent’s house. After Hernandez graduates this spring 2016, she plans on attending graduate school to specialize in applied ethics.
“Lately, I’ve really developed an interest in applied ethics—which is using ethical philosophies to determine correct actions in various areas of everyday life,” Hernandez said. “Particularly, I find environmental ethics, food ethics, and bioethics fascinating.”
Hernandez has received the John O. Cossel Scholarship, the Carol Campbell Renfrew Scholarship and the Francis Seaman Grad Philosophy Scholarship during her time at the University of Idaho.
“Receiving a scholarship support has had a huge impact on my ability to focus on my studies and put all of my effort into the quality of my work here at UI,” Hernandez said. “I’m able to focus without having to worry about how I’m going to pay my tuition or go into massive debt for my education.”
