Eyes Opened Abroad

As a first-generation college student of Hispanic and Native American heritage, Benaiah Cheevers has had many obstacles to overcome. One of his biggest obstacles was figuring out how to navigate the university while paying for his education.

“The scholarships I’ve received at UI have all directly contributed to my ability pursue a quality education.” Cheevers said. “Receiving direct help from programs like the Native Center Diversity Scholars Program and an Axtell Memorial Scholarship for studying abroad have really opened my eyes to the benefits of knowing a second language. I’ve benefitted from all of these means of support and would not have been able to continue my studies without them.”

Cheevers realized his passion for Spanish and Latin American studies when in traveled to Central America to help out at a special needs school in April 2013. Cheevers is now pursuing his degree with the intent to teach and inspire others to pursue their passions.

“Without the amazing advisement, encouragement and communication opportunities like the studying abroad and the scholarships to support me at the UI, I wouldn’t be the student I am today,” Cheevers said.
