Million Bead Project

May 18 - July 21, 2007

Opening Reception: Friday, June 22, 5-8 pm

Would you like to see what 'one million' looks like? Or 'one billion'?

The University of Idaho Prichard Art Gallery is presenting artist Jeanne Leffingwell's "Million Bead Project" from May 18th through July 21st in downtown Moscow.

In this unprecedented art and educational undertaking, Leffingwell and over 2500 students from Idaho, Oregon and Eastern Washington have designed and woven - literally - one million glass beads. The efforts are on display all together in one monumental mosaic, along with projects by several other members of the University of Idaho community.

More than 14,000 hours have gone into the project, which has taken nearly 3 years to complete. All projects are designed to help us consider our place in an increasingly complex world where large numbers bombard us from everywhere, but we have little comprehension of what the actually mean.

Participating schools and learning groups include: Moscow’s West Park, Lena Whitmore, McDonald and Russell Elementary Schools Moscow Charter School, Studio 835 students, Moscow Junior and Senior High art classes, UI "ART 100 / World Art & Culture classes, UI McNair Program, UI College of Education majors, WSU Education majors, Whitworth College Diversity students 'Serve Idaho' Americorps volunteers, Robert Janss School (Cottonwood), Kamiah Middle School, Kamiah High School, Washington Elementary (Pendleton, Oregon) and McLoughlin High School and Freewater Elementary (in Milton-Freewater, Oregon).

In addition to the group projects, works by the following individuals are included: Tina Carlson, Kathy Dickerson, Tammie Hubner, Danyon Hubner, Mary Ullrich, and Jeanne Leffingwell.

A number of beaded works are on sale. Proceeds will help support a cultural exchange residency this June. Leffingwell and assistants Tina Carlson and Virginia Durham are leading a team of Moscow High School students to teach beading to students at Tenochtitlan Primary School in Tomatlan, Mexico.

The Million Bead Project has been generously supported by the Idaho Commission on the Arts, the Latah County Community Foundation, UI College of Art & Architecture Technical Shop, Moscow Building Supply, Norm's Custom Glass, and many fine volunteers. Additional support for the exhibition has been provided by the UI Provost’s Office.
