Agriculture in Nez Perce County

Agriculture in Nez Perce County

Idaho displays agricultural diversity, not only in the products produced, but also in the size of its farms. Although traditional crop and livestock farms still thrive in this region, a surge in small acreage, diversified farms is occurring.

IRM Beef Red Books are available at the University of Idaho Extension/Nez Perce County office, 1239 Idaho Street, Lewiston, Idaho, (208) 799-3096, nezperce@uidaho.edu

Nez Perce County Crops and Cropping Systems

Nez Perce County Crops and Cropping SystemsCrop producers can face numerous pressures posed by low commodity prices, environmental regulations, rising production costs, and competition for export markets. U-Idaho/Nez Perce County Extension educational programs support the contribution of small grains and alternative crops to the economy of Nez Perce County and north central Idaho. Environmental concerns and the growers' ability to compete in today's market place are addressed. Crop advisory committees guide programming development by prioritizing the educational needs of our area farmers.

Small Acreage Farming and Ranching
Small Acreage Farming and RanchingWhether raising grapes in vineyards, fruit in orchards, or produce to sell at the farmer's market or roadside stands, farmers must know enough about varieties, growing conditions, plant diseases, insects pests, and soil fertility management to make good decisions. Business skills such as accounting and bookkeeping are also very important.

USDA Risk Management Agency Whole-farm Insurance Tool

AGR-Lite Wizard, a free online tool that can helps diversified crop and livestock producers gauge whether whole-farm insurance protection makes sense for their operations, is featured on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “USDA Blog.”

http://blogs.usda.gov/2012/03/08/new-online-revenue-protection-tool-from-the-risk-management-agency/

AGR-Lite is a whole-farm revenue protection insurance package that is federally subsidized and available through private insurance agents in 38 states. Among other features, it uses a producer’s 5-year IRS farm income information and an annual farm report as a base for providing a level of guaranteed revenue during the insurance period. AGR-Lite Wizard lets producers estimate what the premium costs would be for their operations, consider various future loss scenarios, and print reports to help them evaluate their insurance options.

AGR-Lite Wizard is available online at https://www.agrilitewizard.com, and free copies on compact disc are available by calling NCAT at 406-494-4572 or emailing Jeff at jeffs@ncat.org.
