4-H Youth Development

4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. 4-H provides learning experiences in which youth, with help from parents, interested adults and older youth, grow personally as they develop skills for living. 4-H’ers have fun while they work and learn together.

Youth ages 8 to 18 years old are eligible to participate in all programs offered by 4-H, including competitive activities and events. 4-H age is the age of the individual on January 1 of the current 4-H year.

Age classification

  • Junior: 8-11 years old
  • Intermediate: 12-14 years old
  • Senior: 15-18 years old

Enrollment in 4-H or any 4-H program is subject to approval by the appropriate Extension personnel. To be eligible for enrollment and/or participation, previous members must be in compliance with state and county policies and not have any outstanding debts/payments due.

Cloverbuds is an educational program for youth ages 5 to 7 years old and to introduce young children to 4-H in a fun, non-competitive way. Cloverbuds may not participate in large animal, ATV or shooting sports projects.

Enroll through the ZSuite portal.

If you are a new 4-H member, you will need to create a new profile. If you are a returning 4-H member, simply log into your profile and enroll for the new year.

After enrolling via ZSuite, you must submit your enrollment fees to the UI Extension, Custer County office before your enrollment becomes complete.

The 4-H - Help for Families and Leaders page is a great resource for enrolling online. We also offer Enrollment Nights, where we help you enroll online, pay your enrollment fees and receive information regarding your 4-H project.

You must be enrolled in ZSuite and have your enrollment fees paid to the UI Extension office before attending any 4-H events. This includes 4-H meetings, livestock weigh-ins, etc.

The enrollment fees allow you to participate in as many projects/clubs as you wish for the year.

  • Horse Project: $25.50
  • Shooting Sports Projects: $22
  • All other 4-H Projects (including Cloverbuds): $21

4-H wouldn’t thrive without its thousands of volunteers. 4-H volunteers coordinate 4-H community clubs, lead 4-H projects and help to plan and conduct local, regional, state and national 4-H events.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer leader, please contact Sarah Baker at the UI Extension, Custer County office by calling 879-2344 or emailing sdbaker@uidaho.edu.

For general information on 4-H Volunteer Leaders, please visit the UI Extension 4-H Youth Development Volunteer page.

All 4-H leaders in Custer County are members of the 4-H Leader's Council. The council addresses different 4-H program issues that come up during the year. They also vote and set policy for various projects.

Meetings are held monthly, rotating locations between Challis and Mackay.
