Horticulture and Small Farms
The major program in this area is the Certified Nursery Professional training program offered in cooperation with the Idaho Nursery and Landscape Association. This nine-week evening educational program prepares candidates for the two exams necessary to achieve status as a Certified Nursery Professional. The course is team-taught by UI Extension and nursery professionals and supported by a web resource page.
The Panhandle Area Nursery and Christmas Tree program consists of Jen Jensen, UI Extension Educator in Boundary County, and Mike Bauer, UI Extension Educator in Bonner County. Current projects include work on evaluation and variety selection of Abies lasiocarpa as a promising material for the nursery and Christmas tree industry in Idaho. The program works with the Idaho Nursery and Landscape Association, the Koootenai Valley Nursery Growers and other partners to Ornamental Nursery Workshop and other programs. More information
This program works with small acreage producers to support small acreage food production through workshops, one-on-one consultations and publications. We offer a course in the fall that is intended for those in the investigative phase of starting a small farm enterprise, Cultivating Success.. More information
The Bonner County Master Gardener Program consists of volunteers that are provided with in depth instruction in Home Horticulture. Through the Master Gardener training sessions, volunteers become knowledgeable about a wide array of horticulture subjects. Master Gardener volunteers assist with the Plant Clinic operated through the Extension office.
