Contests and Events
Local teams of parents, instructors, UI Extension personnel and interested community members are encouraged to work collaboratively in planning, advertising and hosting club, county and regional contests/events. These experiences let youth demonstrate their skills, interact with peers and have fun.
Local & Regional Contests
If your county is planning a shooting sports contest or activity, please share basic information and registration materials with the state coordinator.
State contests are offered in designated disciplines for youth ages 8 to 18. These also serve as qualifying events for eligible Idaho youth (ages 14-18) to advance to the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships. State contests incorporate at least two of the three discipline events youth will encounter at the national level. Consult Idaho 4-H Shooting Sports Rules (PDF) for specific details.
The date and location for state contests will be updated, as soon as those details are confirmed. Counties will be notified when registration materials become available. For 2017, the discipline events at the State 4-H Shooting Sports Contest expanded to include:
June 23, 2017
- Archery (compound) — Jerome Gun Club
- Archery (recurve) — Jerome Gun Club
- Hunting — Jerome Co. Fairgrounds
- Shotgun — Twin Falls Gun Club
June 24, 2017
Rifle (smallbore) — Jerome Gun Club
Registration & Rules
- May 26, 2017 — Early registration for contestants and volunteers
- June 9, 2017 — Last postmark date for contestant registrations. No registrations postmarked after June 9 will be accepted.
Please review the state contest rules. For rifle and shotgun, junior and intermediate contestants will shoot half the "course of fire" noted in the rules. For questions or additional information please contact Jim Wilson.
The plan is to add air rifle and both handgun disciplines for 2018.
