4-H healthy living programs for children include activities and educational programs emphasizing health and fitness while having fun. Programs range from gardening, to preparing nutritious snacks, to incorporating activities designed to keep participants physically fit at club meetings, camps and afterschool programs.
Healthy living is a 4-H National mission mandate focused on engaging youth and families to be physically, socially, and emotionally healthy. 4-H provides adult leaders and volunteers with quality materials and projects in nutrition, food preparation, fitness, and safety so 4-H members can be healthy and active.
Healthy Living programs for 2013 focus on teaching how to prepare and cook nutritious meals; increase fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy consumption; and decrease fat, sugar, salt and calorie intake. The “Think Your Drink” campaign strives to reduce sugar and calorie intake and redirect young people from poor food choices to healthy fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy foods.
