ANNOUNCEMENTS
Announcements are deemed "internal" communications, relevant to a particular unit or college, or the internal university community. Announcements may include professional tips, brief position announcements, internal workshops or events, or employment related items.
NEWS
News Releases cover new timely, important and educational information. A news story is immediate and often delivers time-sensitive information that may change moments later. It must compete with many other stories for a reader's or listener's attention, so it must quickly get to the point and deliver its message. News stories include facts, quotes and details about what is happening. News stories lose impact with time.
What is needed to pursue a news release idea:
(Please note - News submissions may need to be reviewed by Media Relations before they can be published.)
- Briefly explain your program or project in layman's terms. For example: What is the name of the program/project? Who is involved? How long as the project been going?
- What's the news? The news isn't about the research findings; it's about how those findings intersect with key issues and needs of your target audiences. The news isn't about your new program; it's about how that program addresses a challenge that's important to your network.
- Explain the program/project's benefits to University of Idaho students, the community and/or society as a whole.
- How is this information newsworthy? Would your neighbor with no affiliation to the University care about this?
FEATURES
A feature story takes an in-depth look at what's going on behind the news. It gets into the lives of people. It tries to explain why and how a trend developed. Unlike news, a feature does not have to be tied to a current event or a breaking story. But it can grow out of something that's reported in the news. Feature stories are not as recent or as important as news; they are entertaining as well as educational, but have a "soft" angle to them. If you have an idea for a web feature, please email
