Fritz Fiedler, PhD, PE
Associate Professor, Hydrology, Water Quality Engineering

Education
B.S., 1987, University of New Hampshire
M.S., 1989, University of New Hampshire
Ph.D., 1997, Colorado State University

Teaching
CE 325 Fundamentals of Hydrologic Engineering
CE 330 Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering
CE 421 Engineering Hydrology
CE 433 Water Quality Management

Research Interests
  • Mathematical modeling of flow and transport processes
  • Effects of scale and spatial variability on hydrologic response

My research interests are in the broad area of measurements and modeling of hydrologic and environmental systems. As such, I have worked on a variety of projects, including developing subsurface hydrocarbon measurement techniques, analyzing the effects of tillage and reconsolidation on soil-water retention characteristics, exploring the effects of scale and spatial variability of soil properties on hydrologic response, and developing numerical methods for routing discontinuous surface water flows over infiltrating surfaces.

Current Research and Activities

  • High-resolution simulation of flood flows over complex terrain
  • Developing distributed infiltration estimates to support two-dimensional hydraulic routing for flood hazard analysis at INEEL
  • Surface interactions in Hortonian overland flow
  • Characterizing southwest Snake River organic matter to establish water quality model boundary conditions and assess TMDL implementation strategies
