Idaho Water and Energy Resources Research Institute

      (IWERRI)

      Director:  Leland L. (Roy) Mink

The Idaho Water and Energy Resources Research Institute's (IWERRI) mission is to support and direct water and water-related research which addresses Idaho's water problems.  The Institute was established in 1963 by action of the University of Idaho Board of Regents.  In 1964, the Institute began receiving federal funds through an annual appropriation (Section 104 of Public Law 98-242) which is presently administered by the U.S. Geological Survey.  Unlike many institutes or centers of research, IWERRI is not singular to the University of Idaho.  The Institute has statewide focus and endeavors to stimulate, coordinate, and provide leadership for water resources research in the State of Idaho and to cooperate with sister institutions in Idaho and adjoining states.  In addition, the Institute cooperates with and assists local entities and state and federal agencies in their responsibilities concerned with water and related land resources and to provide public involvement in identifying research needs.

The Institute's Policy Advisory Committee and Technical Advisory Committee consist of representatives from the three major state universities, and representatives from state and federal agencies and industry.  The committee members are able to bring different perspectives which contribute to an informed consensus concerning state environmental issues and the development of timely policy.

Researchers from the University of Idaho, Idaho State University, and Boise State University cooperate with state and federal agencies and industry in the development of programs which address current water resources, water-related energy, and environmental questions.  Our state and regional focus enables us to draw upon a wide variety of expertise necessary to investigate a range of water-related topics.  The Institute also provides a diverse education and information transfer program.  This program includes the sponsorship and coordination of relevant conferences, workshops, seminars, and short courses throughout the year.

IWERRI is a university-wide research unit. Research conducted by IWERRI faculty in the College of Engineering is reported in the principal investigator's departmental abstracts.
