      Foreword

The 1996 edition of the Engineering and Computer Science Research Report begins our venture into electronic publishing.  Future editions of the Research Report will reside on the college’s webpage and be readily accessible to the community as an electronic report over the world wide web.   Publishing our research activities in this open forum will allow access by our colleagues throughout the country, and indeed the world.  Paper copies of the report will still be available to those requesting them, although we anticipate substantial savings in publication costs by keeping the number printed to a minimum.

There are always changes in the college to report from one year until the next.  The college occupied the new Engineering and Physics Building, or ‘EPB’ as it is called, early in the year.  Our Mechanical Engineering Department is now housed on the second floor of EPB, along with the Physics Department.   Biological and Agricultural Engineering is on the third floor; the first floor is devoted to classrooms and Engineering Outreach video classroom space; and the basement houses our Transportation Center and research laboratories.  It is an excellent building to support the research mission of the institution.

This year also brought a change in the engineering education mission of the college, with the transfer of our three undergraduate programs in Boise, ME, EE and CE, to Boise State University.  The UI engineering faculty in Boise are renewing their emphasis on graduate education and research both in Boise and throughout the state.

Your comments and suggestions on the Research Report  are always welcome.

David Woodall, Associate Dean and Director of Research
