Emergency Preparedness Three Step Cycle

1. PREPARE
  • Assess & address vulnerabilities to decrease the need for response – prevent / mitigate hazards
  • Make emergency plans
  • Publish emergency plans
  • Coordinate plans with emergency partners
  • Participate in training exercises


AS INDIVIDUALS:

  • Three days, three ways
    1. Make a plan for yourself
    2. Build a 72 hour kit
    3. Get involved – volunteer and train
  • Update your emergency notification information regularly


AS UNITS:
Follow instructions in the Site Specific Annex

  • Communicate Site-Specific Annex to students, staff and faculty
  • Address emergency management in courses at beginning of each semester
  • Conduct drills and exercises


AS A UNIVERSITY:

Compliance with federal emergency management guidelines

  • Emergency Management Plan
  • Train University emergency management team in federally-approved courses
  • Exercise with State and local emergency managers and first responders
2. RESPOND
  1. Take action to effectively contain and resolve an emergency. Your priorities are saving lives, property and the environment.
  2. Execute your emergency plans in coordination with the University, the host institution or program, and local response agencies
  3. Activate communication plans using multiple modalities (e.g. emergency notification system, e-mail, text message, and phone).
  4. Determine and execute the appropriate response strategy.
  5. Account for students, faculty, and staff.
3. RECOVER
  1. Restore the learning environment
  2. Physical and Structural Recovery
  3. Business Recovery
  4. Psychological and Emotional Recovery
  5. Conduct an after-action session as a tool for modifying and improving your emergency management plan
