Excelling Into the Future: Alumni Award for Excellence

By Amanda Cairo

Recognizing excellence throughout the University, five College of Education students will be among 53 senior-level undergraduate, graduate and law students honored at the 31st annual Alumni Award for Excellence banquet, Friday, Dec. 10.

“We are pleased to highlight the University’s legacy of leading by honoring the high-achieving students who are leaders in the classroom, laboratory, campus and community,” says Steve Johnson, executive director of Alumni Relations. “Very soon, these students will step forward to become leaders in their professions, communities, state and nation.”

Heather Boni, dance; Niki Braman, dance and psychology; Staci Stratton, exercise science and health; Sara Lynn Cameron, Ed.S. school psychology; and Hui-Wen Huang, doctoral candidate in education were selected through a university-wide nomination and review process. They were considered for the award for their outstanding academic success, demonstrated career and professional preparation, and involvement and leadership in the campus and community.

“It really gave me an opportunity to reflect on how much I have done and accomplished in my four years at the University of Idaho through my involvement in athletics and extracurricular organizations,” says Stratton. “However, the most exciting part about receiving this award for me is that I am able to share it with my coach and mentor who has been such a great influence for myself and many others on campus.”

Stratton was excited to learn she was a recipient, but realized she could not have become a leader just on her own. Each student also is asked to invite a guest to the banquet: a University of Idaho faculty or staff member who has most influenced his or her academic career. Stratton chose Tom Jager, head swim and dive coach, as the individual who really helped her to accomplish all she has as a Vandal.

“He has always encouraged our whole team to be strong, hardworking young women and leaders, and by his example has taught us how sacrifice, determination and a little selflessness can take you a long way,” says Stratton.

Professors Tom Fairchild, counseling and school psychology, Greg Halloran, dance, Jerry Tuchscherer, curriculum and instruction, and Melissa Scholten, dance, also will be in attendance with their students.

The banquet in the Student Union Building Ballroom begins at 4:30 p.m. with a no-host social and is followed at 5:15 p.m. with the dinner and awards ceremony.
