Renovated UI College of Education Building Earns LEED Gold Certification

For the second time in less than a month, a University of Idaho building has received LEED Gold certification honors for its design and construction, this time for an innovative building renovation. The College of Education building, located on the Moscow campus, was built in 1969 and recently underwent a two-year, $17 million remodel that earned the building the sustainability certification. UI’s Integrated Research and Innovation Center (IRIC) also has earned LEED Gold honors. Read more

Brian Smentkowski Appointed Director of Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

The University of Idaho Dance Program will host the Idaho Dance Education Organization's (IDEO) third annual conference, "Embodying Healthy Practices" Oct. 28 in Moscow. Faculty and students in various disciplines are encouraged to register and submit proposals to share expertise on healthy practices that could benefit a variety of movement disciplines while networking with colleagues across the state and Northwest region. Proposal submissions are due June 1. A variety of session formats (movement, exploration, lectures, panel discussions and performances) will be provided to support professional development for movement teachers, K-12 and early childhood educators, dance studio owners, and dance students ages 12 and older. Pilates Education Program Returns to the University of Idaho

The internationally recognized BASI Pilates Mat Teacher Training Program will return to the University of Idaho campus this fall. Registration is open for the program, which is scheduled for Sept. 1-3, 2017, and April 27-29, 2018, in the University of Idaho Physical Education Building. The Special Education Statewide Instructional/Behavioral Coordinator (SESIBC) works to develop and maintain a sound working relationship as a collegiate team member in collaboration with all staff at the SDE Division of Special Education, BSU-SESTA, and CDHD-SESTA. The Statewide Instructional/Behavioral Coordinator will develop coaching instructional supports in order to increase statewide capacity of education systems for students with disabilities age 3 through 21. The SESIBC will be required to make informed decisions in regard to instructional coordination and support, professional development, collaboration and team work. These decisions will impact the SDE, special education district personnel, and the overall special education efforts in Idaho. It will be a busy weekend for Gunnery Sgt. Robert "Bobby" Brown, a 32-year-old University of Idaho student. Before the Marine, who is a student in the UI Navy Reserve Officers' Training Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program, graduates from the UI on Saturday, he will be commissioned today as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and will relinquish his duties as battalion commander for the UI Navy ROTC. College of Education Professor Damon Burton Receives Honors

Damon Burton, professor of exercise science and health in the College of Education, received the 2016 Outstanding Individual Award from the Idaho Recreation and Parks Association. He was honored for his significant contributions for his 28 years serving on the City of Moscow Parks and Recreation Commission. During Burton's tenure, he has served on many task forces including a pool committee resulting in the Hamilton-Lower Aquatics Center as well as one that resulted in the newly developed Moscow School District Community Playfields Complex. He also has coach numerous youth sport teams over several decades.

"sally has always been a strong advocate for art education in the state of Idaho and her dedication and mentorship has contributed to a growing community in support of the arts," said Derek Kahler, an art teacher at Post Falls High School. Professor emeritus Tom Fairchild dies at 69

Former UI Professor Thomas Newman Fairchild died on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. Tom died at home with his wife, Linda Britton-Fairchild, his son, David Fairchild, and his daughter, Megan Pestka, present at his side. His children had great love and admiration for their father and visited him as often as they could during his last years. Read more

Auditions to perform in the UI-Dance Program's fall main stage dance concert will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, in the Physical Education Building (PEB), Studio 110. The concert will be featuring contemporary choreography by dance faculty Belle Baggs, Melanie Meenan and Colleen Bialas. Gwen Mitchell, clinical assistant professor with the College of Education and Director of Clinical Services at the Center on Disabilities and Human Development, teamed with colleagues to create a storyboard to increase knowledge about autism spectrum in college students. The storyboard is written from the perspective of a hypothetical student who is on the autism spectrum, and highlights some of the myths about autism, strengths and weakness faculty and staff may not be aware of, while providing valuable information about how best to serve students, as well as highlighting the rights of people with a disability. They’re pumping dirty water from the bottom of a large aquarium of goldfish and filtering it through an aquaponic planter with lettuce sprouts growing among absorbent clay pebbles.

The College of Education Library (IMTC) will be hosting a series of early literacy workshops for parents and children, birth through age 6. Workshops will include information for parents about early literacy skills as well as fun activities for children. All participating families will receive free picture books, a book bag and letter magnets. The workshops will be held from 10-11 a.m. three Saturdays in April, April 9, 16 and 23. Attendance at all three sessions is encouraged. Workshops will be held in Room 13 of the Education/Laboratory of Anthropology building at the University of Idaho.
