Basic Instruction Program

The Department of Movement Sciences offers more than 40 different 1-credit physical activity courses, open to all UI students, staff and faculty members. These courses are designed to promote Healthy Active Lifestyles for participants through enjoyable and interesting classes. Students have the opportunity to earn credit for taking PEB courses, and all participants have the opportunity to learn new skills, participate in physical activity and improve their overall well-being.

Along with classic sport or exercise related classes (including basketball, volleyball, swimming, yoga, resistance training, etc.), the Basic Instruction Program offers a number of unique courses, including fly fishing, parkour, archery, Tai Ji and more.

  • Overseeing physical activities, including ensuring student safety

  • Assessing student performance

Positions pay $625 per section taught each semester. Activity instructors are required to have previous teaching experience and a current CPR/First Aid certification.

Physical Education Basic (PEB) Course Descriptions:

Abs & Glutes:

This course is designed to focus primarily on abdominals and gluteus maximus areas through a variety of different exercises.

Bootcamp:

This course is designed to develop knowledge of physical activity including the use of appropriate terminologies, motor skills, and techniques. The students will develop and maintain cardiovascular efficiency, strength, endurance, flexibility and self-confidence.

Cardio Blast:

This course is focused on cardiovascular fitness. The students will be exposed to a variety of workouts and need to demonstrate knowledge regarding the components of cardiovascular fitness.

Jogging/Conditioning:

This course focuses on increasing your cardiovascular efficiency, and muscular strength and endurance. We will be exercising various muscle groups to help students to have effective jogging technique and increase overall fitness.

Personal Fitness:

In cooperation with the SRC Wellness program, this course is designed to provide students the opportunity to attend a variety of fitness classes and exercise programs in order to enhance their personal fitness and instill a habit of lifelong exercise. The schedule is flexible, but access to the SRC is required as well as the purchase of a personal fitness pass to attend wellness classes.

Pilates:

This course focuses on breathing and Pilates techniques, exercising core and other muscle groups. Pilates is used to improve health, performance and fitness components such as strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.

Self Defense:

This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of topics, situations, techniques and concepts to increase awareness and personal safety in a real-life scenarios.

Weight Training/Conditioning:

This course is designed to introduce basic weight training skills and knowledge to improve strength, muscular endurance, hypertrophy and flexibility. The students will be able to identify and properly execute technique for different muscle groups, create a program to achieve their own desired outcome and learn about spotting lifts.

Weight Training/Conditioning - Intermediate:

This course is designed to increase strength, muscular endurance, hypertrophy, and flexibility. The students will be able to identify and properly execute techniques for different muscle groups and create a program to achieve their own desired outcome. Pre-test is required to determine intermediate status.

Yoga, Beginning:

In this course, we focus on skill development, terminology and enhancing your mind and body connection through beginning level poses.

Yoga, Intermediate:

Students will be challenged by more advanced poses to get further flexibility, balance, and enhance your mind and body connection. It is recommended to have a minimum of two semesters of Beginning Yoga in order to enroll for this course.

Yoga Flow:

This course is designed to focus on breathing technique and meditation to support balance and body alignment through flowing poses.

Power Yoga:

This class will challenge your strength, flexibility, self-discipline and stamina. Previous yoga experience is preferred.

Yoga Toning:

This course will introduce you to the basics of yoga flow with an emphasis on toning through the practice of the asanas (postures) using Beth Shaw’s YogaFit® program. The practice of yoga aims to create greater health, mental awareness and balance. YogaFit® is part of the hatha yoga tradition and is a Vinyasa style.

Vinyasa Yoga:

This course is designed to improve health and performance. The fitness component is balance-coordination and flexibility. The students will be able to determine terminology, skill and technique of Vinyasa at the conclusion of this course.

Zumba:

This course is introducing Zumba®, a Latin-inspired cardio workout. It is mainly non-verbal instruction. Movement instructions include hand gestures that indicate direction, holds or movement changes. By the end, the class should understand the basic hand gestures, styles of music and movement and be able to teach a portion of a Zumba® routine.

Adventure Racing:

This course is designed to teach the student to understand and demonstrate proper skill and technique of map/course navigation, understand terminology, rules and strategies of adventure racing, grasp and demonstrate what goes into planning and holding an adventure race, develop and maintain cardiovascular efficiency and demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team and as an individual.

Archery, Beginning:

This course is designed to introduce; the proper nomenclature of archery apparatus, the basic skills, rules for target archery and other arenas of competition and activities of the sport. The students will develop basic archery skills, strategies, error detection and correction method.

Archery, Intermediate:

This class is designed to help students learn more advanced techniques in the sport of archery. The course reinforces proper shooting techniques and safety through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice of archery skills. Skill testing is required on the first day to determine advanced status.

Archery, Intro to Hunting:

Introduction to archery for the purpose of hunting. Therefore, the course will include terminologies, rules, laws, licensing, and so on for the purpose of hunting.

Disc Golf:

This course is designed to introduce basic Disc Golf skills. The course will be primarily focused on backhand and forehand but also include thumber and tomahawk. Three styles of putting will be discussed and the advantages and disadvantages of each style will be addressed. There is an entire rulebook for professional play, but this class will primarily focus on the basic rules required to play recreational Disc Golf safely.

Fencing, Beginning:

This course is an introduction to modern fencing, primarily emphasizing Olympic-style foil fencing. The course teaches rules and customs and improves strength, skills and techniques of fencing.

Fencing, Advanced:

Advanced Fencing emphasizes basics, rather than bouting, to provide a foundation for competitive as well as recreational fencers. The participants will improve skills and techniques and increase overall physical fitness. Beginning fencing or other fencing experience and permission of instructor is required.

Fly Fishing:

This course introduces the proper basic nomenclature of the fly fishing apparatus and tackle, basic skills and rules for fly fishing and fly casting and other areas of the sport. A Saturday field trip is required at the sixth or seventh week of the course.

Golf:

This course is designed to introduce basic golf skills, knowledge, terminology, rules and strategies.

Ice Skating:

This course is designed to introduce basics of ice skating such as skills, forms and rules. The students will improve their not only skating skills, but also cardiovascular efficiency, strength, balance, coordination and flexibility.

Karate, Beginning:

This course is designed to teach the basics of Wado-ryu Karate. The students will learn basic blocks, kicks, punches, kata (forms), sparring techniques, self-defense and also improve their overall fitness. At the end of the semester, the students will participate in a promotional test to attain a colored belt.

Orienteering & Geocaching:

This course is designed to teach the student to understand and demonstrate proper skill and technique of compass/GPS and map navigation, understand Geocaching etiquette, rules, and strategies of finding different types of caches. Students will also possess and demonstrate the ability to hide their own cache. Geocaching requires the ability to hike in various terrains and weather conditions.

Tennis, Beginning:

This course is designed to introduce basic tennis skills: groundstroke, serves, returns and volleys, and knowledge: rules of the game and scoring.

Tennis, Intermediate:

Building on skills learned in beginning tennis, students will learn more advanced skills such as slice, lobs, drop shots and strategies. Beginning tennis is a prerequisite.

Tumbling and Trampoline:

Develop gymnastics skills and technique on various types of apparatus (vault, bars, beam, floor exercise and trampoline). Safety and proper progressions will be emphasized.

Wall Climbing:

This course is a basic introduction to the fundamentals of rock climbing on the SRC climbing wall with skill sessions, demonstrations and practical experience. The course focuses on skill development, health and fitness climbing and safety in the sport of climbing.

Basketball:

This course is designed to introduce the basic skills, knowledge, terminology, rules and strategies through instruction and participation of basketball drills and games. The students will improve their overall fitness through active participation.

Ice Hockey and Conditioning:

The students will learn the basic premise of ice hockey, including the basic skills, strategies, techniques and benefits of team play.

Sand Volleyball:

This course is designed to introduce proper form, skill, techniques, terminology of sand volleyball, and to improve cardiovascular efficiency, strength, endurance and flexibility.

Soccer:

In this course, the students will learn basic skills, techniques, terminologies, rules, strategies, and benefit of team play. The participants will improve cardiovascular efficiency, strength and endurance.

Softball:

This course is designed to develop the basic skills, knowledge, terminology, rules and strategies through instruction and participation of softball drills and games.

Ultimate Frisbee, Beginning:

This course is designed to introduce the skills, knowledge, rules and tactics to play ultimate frisbee proficiently.

Ultimate Frisbee, Intermediate:

This course teaches additional skills, such as offensive and defensive techniques for more competitive play.

Volleyball Beginning:

In this course, the students will learn proper form, skills, technique, terminology and rules of the game. The participants develop and maintain cardiovascular efficiency and demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment.

Volleyball Advanced:

In addition to completing beginning volleyball, the participants will be expected to have previous experience and be able to practice more advanced skills and techniques. Skill testing on the first day will be required in order to determine advanced status.

Deep Water Conditioning:

Exercising/jogging in the deep water gives you resistance on your body equally. This is a more intense workout, which increases your range of motion, while decreasing stress and impact on your body. We will be training throughout the semester for recreational water polo.

Swim Bootcamp:

Enrolling students must have knowledge of specific terms and techniques related to swimming, and demonstrate minimal mastery of all four competitive strokes. Must be able to swim unassisted 500m distance to enroll in this course. This is a swimming endurance class.

Swim Techniques and Conditioning:

This course is designed to refine your existing stroke skills (freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke, elementary backstroke, and butterfly). In addition, the course introduces enhanced diving, in-water safety skills, and flip turns. The participants will improve swimming abilities and increase physical fitness.

Beginning Swim for Non-Swimmers:

This course is designed to introduce hydrodynamic principals, strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke, and elementary backstroke), diving, and in-water safety skills. This is an ideal class for the non-swimmer.

Advanced Beginning Swimming:

This course is designed to further build on skills taught in beginning swimming. Students should be able to swim 25-50 yards on front and back. Focus will be on learning proper swimming technique as well as building stamina in swimming.

Intermediate Swim:

This course is focused on improving swimming techniques and participating in activities that increase the fitness level of participants. The students will develop a minimal mastery of four completive strokes as well as proficiency in elementary diving. The students must be able to swim an unassisted 100m distance to enroll in this course.

Water Sports and Conditioning:

Water Sports and Conditioning the course will begin with basic fundamentals and progress toward more complicated aspects of water sports, which include the following: water polo, underwater hockey, and competitive swimming. Students must be comfortable swimming in deep water to enroll for this class.
