Welcome

Welcome to the University of Idaho, College of Education Athletic Training Program. Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians and other health professionals to optimize patient care,  client activity and participation in athletics, work and life. The practice of athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of chronic and acute medical conditions.

The University of Idaho College of Education currently has two outstanding Athletic Training Education Programs. For Certified Athletic Trainers, we are extremely proud to offer the nation’s first Doctor of Athletic Training program that began summer 2011. This innovative two year program is designed for certified Athletic Trainers that are already working in the profession. For students considering Athletic Training as a career, we offer a Masters of Science in Athletic Training which prepares students for certification as an Athletic Trainer.  For current or prospective University of Idaho undergraduate students, we are currently designing a unique 3+2 program, where students are able to earn a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education and Master's of Science in Athletic Training degree in five years.

Career opportunities for athletic trainers are excellent. The United States Department of Labor (USDL) predicts that Athletic Training will grow 37 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations. Common practice settings that athletic trainers are found include: high schools, colleges, clinics, hospitals, industrial corporate settings, military, professional sports, club and recreational sports, fitness centers, and many more. In fact new practice settings are added yearly as businesses and patients gain better understanding of the benefits of hiring and being treated by athletic trainers. For more information on Athletic Training as a profession, please visit the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s website (www.nata.org).
