B.S. Education: Business and Marketing Option

COE students

A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Education, with an emphasis in business and marketing education, prepares you to teach at the high school or postsecondary level, as well as in a corporate setting, in the subjects of marketing, finance, accounting, information technology, entrepreneurship and economics. You may also apply for Idaho secondary teacher certification with teaching endorsements in business technology education, marketing technology education, and economics.


The business and marketing education program focuses on the core areas of business critical to the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for success in the workforce. As a student in the program, you will develop a well-rounded business knowledge, with courses in management, marketing finance, accounting and computer technology. You will learn how to examine and teach business-related subjects from a variety of perspectives. You’ll develop skills for life, including the following highly marketable skills:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Accounting and financial skills
  • Human relation skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Real work experience

Graduates of the program are certified to teach at the secondary level.


The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education is located on the Moscow, Idaho campus. This degree option is available only on the Moscow campus, but you will have the opportunity to student teach at a school located nearly anywhere in the U.S.


Prepare for Success

If you’re interested in business and also enjoy working with young people, this degree may be a good fit. Students who enjoy business classes in high school, and are organized, good on computers, and like problem solving, may consider this degree. To prepare for a degree in business and marketing education, take courses that will teach you about management, economics, accounting and computers. These skills will prepare you for advanced studies at the college level.


Your First Year

In addition to completing the University of Idaho required core classes, you can expect to take the following courses in your first two years of study:

  • Intro to Financial Accounting
  • Intro to Business Enterprises
  • Legal Environment of Business
  • Consumer Economics Issues
  • Microcomputer Applications
  • Economics 


What You Can Do

With a degree in business marketing education, you will be prepared for the following career options:

  • Public or private school teacher
  • Community college or technical institute teacher
  • Instructor in business and industry in an office or retail setting
  • Trainer in a business setting
  • Human resources development specialist


Opportunities

Graduates of the program are certified to teach at the secondary level. You will also be qualified to teach at postsecondary institutions. Some graduates have positions in a business setting as a trainer or human resource development specialist. With a specialization in teaching business and marketing education, you will have the skills and knowledge to positively influence and shape the lives of students and business professionals by helping them:

School teacher salaries average between $30,000 and $50,000 for 10 months of work. Experienced teachers can earn more. Teachers receive annual raises and quickly move across the salary scale. Teachers also have extra vacation time over holiday breaks and during the summer.

Current Research

University of Idaho faculty members in the business and marketing education program have research interests in the areas of business technology and standards, the condition of business in Idaho, leadership and technology competencies.


Activities

Business and marketing students are often involved in Business Professionals of America and Delta Epsilon Chi (DECA), an international association of high school and college students studying marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and service.


Hands-On Experience

To earn a teaching degree, you will spend a semesters in an internship position at a high school. Other opportunities to be involved with high school students include working with students in Business Professionals of America and DECA. These two clubs allow university students to work directly with high school students helping them prepare for business competition at the local, state and national level.


Online & Outreach

A teaching degree involves working with local schools and projects within the community. You will get to know your profession well as you collaborate with local schools and work with some outstanding, high-achieving high school students.


Faculty Involvement

The business and marketing education program is one of the smaller programs within the College of Education, providing students an opportunity to get to know each other and to work closely with their adviser.
