Green Greek Certification

The Green Greek Certification Program recognizes Greek chapters at UI that practice sustainable operations and behaviors within their chapters. The certification is based on living practices in action areas such as: awareness and education, transportation, events, habits, and resource conservation throughout the house and more.

UI Green Greek Certification transforms houses into green and efficient living spaces. Greek Eco-Ambassadors work closely with the UI Sustainability Center to target four main areas of sustainability in their houses: Water, Energy, Recycling and Waste, and Composting. A house signs up for UI Green Greek Certification through the UI Sustainability Center. Together we complete an initial house survey and sign a tailored contract. Goals are then set for that academic year, which target the four areas. Houses gain certification at the end of the academic year for completing contract objectives. Houses will conduct preliminary and concluding audits to measure progress. In addition chapters will be required to have a Greek Eco-Ambassador who is committed to meeting with other Greek Eco-Ambassadors bi-weekly. Being very large and active, Greek houses tend to be magnets for energy misuse and waste. The goal for UI Green Greek Certification is to educate Greek houses about sustainability and create a culture of sustainability within the Greek community.

Why is the Green Office Certification Program Important?

The Green Certification Program’s support of education and outreach is in alignment with University of Idaho Climate Action Plan strategies. The impact of the program's criteria help reduce carbon emissions and conserve water and energy resources.
