2017 Advising Symposium Call for Proposals

We welcome all proposals related to academic advising and invite submissions from staff, faculty, and administrators. Presentations are allotted 50 minutes during concurrent sessions. With this year’s theme of addressing pivotal moments, we particularly encourage presentations that pertain to one or more of the following areas:

  • Innovative advising models and programs
  • Advising to enrich the higher education experience (e.g. addressing failure and making meaning, relationship building, tough conversations, etc.)
  • Personal development for advising practice (e.g. preparation, evaluation, sustainability, etc.)
  • Advising special populations including but not limited to first-year, at-risk, nontraditional, or online students
  • Engaging in assessment (of individual advisors or of advising programs)

Submission Requirements for Concurrent Sessions:

  • Complete presenter information including name(s), affiliation(s), and current position(s) Please note that up to two presenters per session are eligible to attend the symposium at no cost.  Additional presenters will be required to pay applicable registration fees.
  • Descriptive presentation title (maximum: 15 words)
  • Brief abstract to appear in the symposium program (maximum: 100 words)
  • Supporting description of your presentation that can be used by the conference committee to evaluate your proposal for inclusion in the symposium (maximum: 250 words)
  • Optional scheduling information: restrictions regarding your availability on the day of the symposium should your proposal be accepted

We will be holding an Advising Blitz session where presenters will share one concrete advising practice in a fast-paced short format. This is an opportunity to help one another build our tool kits for quality advising. In 5 minutes or less using no technological aids, Advising Blitz presenters will describe a directly applicable idea that others can implement after the symposium. We invite you to share your favorite advising technique, a particularly effective activity, or any other piece of your advising programming that works well. Up to 2 additional minutes will be allowed for each presenter to field and answer any questions. The Advising Blitz will take place in the afternoon with refreshments included. An individual can participate in a concurrent session presentation, the advising blitz, or both.

Submission Requirements for Advising Blitz:

  • Complete presenter information including name(s), affiliation(s), and current position(s)
  • Descriptive blitz title (maximum: 15 words)
  • Supporting description of your blitz content that can be used by the conference committee to evaluate your proposal for inclusion in the Advising Blitz (maximum: 250 words)
