Neursicence Core Courses

The core courses form a central, shared educational experience for all Neuroscience students. These courses will enable them to share a common language, and to discuss problems from multiple disciplinary points of view. This shared experience will also give Neuroscience students a sense of identity and community, which will encourage them to help each other overcome cultural and terminological differences that may make such interdisciplinary interactions challenging. Core courses include those in neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience, computation neuroscience, methods and statistics, and scientific ethics.

Topics in Neuroscience (1 cr, max arr). Discussion of current neuroscience literature.

Neur 509
Design and Analysis of Biomedical Experiments (3 cr) Design of experiments with application to clinical and basic biomedical research; choosing, applying and evaluating appropriate data analysis. Prereq: an introductory course in probability and statistics.

Fundamentals of Neurobiology (4 cr). WSNeuro 520. Biophysical, anatomical, and systems neuroscience for beginning graduate students.

Neur 521
Biological Signal Processing (3 cr). Introduction to computational neuroscience. Neurons and neuron models, basic signaling mechanisms of neurons, networks of neurons, learning models, learning model algorithms, weight-based memory models. The Hodgkin-Huxley model. A principal emphasis in this course is the development of quantitative models and analysis of neural systems. A term project is required. Prereq: perm.

Cognitive Neuroscience (3 cr.) Same as Psyc 526 This course will examine research in human and animal cognition and its neurological basis. Material covered will include the study of normal cognitive processes in humans with noninvasive behavioral and physiological techniques (e.g., reaction times, fMRI, EEG), the study of brain-injured patients, behavioral and neurophysiological research in animals, and the comparative analyses of cognitive processes across organisms. Computational approaches towards cognitive and neural processing will also be addressed. A selection of the following topics will be covered: perception, object recognition, attention, memory, spatial cognition, motor control, language, executive control, and development.

Advanced Topics in Integrative Neuroscience (3 cr). Same as WSU Neuro 540. Concepts and controversies in neuroscience that involve integrative properties of cell systems. (alt/yrs).

Advanced Topics in Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience (3 cr). Same as WSU Neuro 541. Concepts and controversies in neuroscience that involve nerve cell function and regulation. (alt/yrs).

Neur WS542
Advanced Topics in Disciplinary Neuroscience (3 cr). Same as WSU Neuro 542. Concepts and controversies in neuroscience that revolve around traditional approaches to nervous system study. (alt/yrs).

Advanced Topics in Behavioral/ Clinical Neuroscience (3 cr). Same as WSU Neuro 543. Concepts and controversies in neuroscience that involve normal and pathological aspects of behavior. (alt/yrs).
